Tanzania Getting It Right on Water Stewardship in the Extractive Industry?
Dodoma. Efforts to improve water stewardship within Tanzania's extractive industry are gaining momentum, with the government citing progress despite lingering challenges around pollution and governance.

According to Mr Epahroditius Sabuni from the Vice President’s Office, Department of Environment, environmental protection remains a key priority especially in areas surrounding mining operations.

“Our office is making direct efforts to ensure that water sources are protected and kept safe. We are guided by the Environmental Act of 2024, which provides a solid legal framework for conserving and safeguarding water resources,” Mr Sabuni said during the Extractive Industries Forum in Dodoma.

However, water-related challenges persist in mining zones. Communities living near extractive sites have long raised concerns over water contamination caused by mining activities.

“There have been problems in governance and oversight, but we are working on them. In fact, we have made significant progress,” Mr Sabuni noted.

The remarks come as stakeholders continue to push for stronger environmental accountability across Tanzania’s extractive sector.
